After reading and watching the events unfolding in the Middle East I was interested in what some of the reasons for all of the tensions in the area were. And then one day November 4th to be exact I was watching the news and they did a short story on the anniversary of the Iranian Hostage Crisis. I wanted to learn why this event was so pivotal in defining American foreign policy going into the 21st century.
Research Process
My research process began by searching on the internet and reading some article about my topic so I could get a brief overview of all of the events that transpired during the 444 days and the days leading up to it. To understand the conditions that the hostages lived in I read a book that was a first person account of one of the hostages. I also attempted to find a counter-viewpoint on the crisis, for example one from the point of view of the hostage takers or one of the rioters. And finally I looked through newspapers and news reports during the time of the hostage crisis to see what society’s view on the crisis was in America.
Project Development
I chose the website category for my NHD project because not only am I greatly interested in technology but the website format allowed me to use many other types of media other than just print. I created the site using Weebly. I started making the site by looking at other professionally made websites and trying to find the design objects that worked for them and incorporate them into my website. Then I put all of my writing onto the site and then put the other media around it.
Relationship to the NHD Theme
The topic this year was Debate and Diplomacy, both of these things were extremely important during the hostage crisis. It took over 400 days of debate and diplomacy for the hostages to be freed. And not only were they important in the short term, with freeing the hostages. But also long term with America’s relationship with the Middle East.
